Braces

March 5, 2010

The post that has taken me a long time to formulate how I was going to post. I have put in the corner here as you can see a picture of what my braces look like.  I wear what they call a KAFO.

I started at the age of 18 month wearing braces to the hip, HKAFO’s  but gradually was able to move to just the KAFO as I became stronger in my hip area.

I honestly don’t remember much about learning to walk at a young age. I have been told that I was taken to PT 4 days a week. I had a great opportunity as a young child to attend Easter Seals for Preschool and they worked on helping me walk. I used the traditional under the arm crutches til the age of 11. I learned at that age to walk with forearm crutches and walk with them to this day..i know this was not a post about crutches sorry.

This post is going to be a bit short because I am not sure what  to write about walking? I guess its cause I don’t know any different, meaning walking with the braces vs walking without them.
I am not going to lie and tell you that teaching your child to walk is going to be easy cause its not. I imagine there will be “battles’ to not want to wear the braces especially in the summer time because honestly they can be hot. But I would encourage you if your child is young to put the braces on them in the beginning a few hours a day. I wear mine now from the time I get up at 7am til I go to bed at 11pm.  Again I don’t ever remember the braces bothering me they are just a part of who I am, they allow me and your child to be as independent as we can be.
As you can tell I am big on independence. Just the way I was raised I guess. I want to close with a video that I found on YouTube of someone walking with braces and crutches..Enjoy and let it be an encouragement to you. Well I could not find anyone walking with crutches so i had to settle for a walker.  I guess now a days they must start kids on walkers..back when I learned to walk in the early 70’s it was like I said the under arm crutches..oh well..its still encouraging to me to see kids up right now matter how..crutches or walkers.

new website

March 1, 2010

http://obervationsandtransistions.wordpress.com

this website is something totally different from my SB website. I started this one when I moved back to the US. I wanted to continue with this because there are always observations and new things happening in my life that do not have any thing to do with SB.

I have not forgotten the request from one of my friends here to talk about my braces and experiences with wearing them. look for that in the next few days. It sounds like I may be snowed in tomorrow so that might be a good thing to do..blog. what do you think?

Ideas? for topics

February 27, 2010

Hope everyone had  great week. Hope everyone has been able to stay well.  I am feeling much better this weekend then I did last weekend. Its been a rather busy week for me at work. I was not online here much just enough to talk to my boyfriend and check some of his websites out..reminder check out his new sites that I have posted on my blog..exciting news this week he had his first two sales..he was so excited.
Well today I have been trying to do some brain storming and come up with things that you all might be interested in reading about and one idea that I had was to do some research on family friendly places to visit that might be accessible, my thinking is that since warmer weather  and summer is coming that this might be a good idea to look into. Any other ideas or things you want to hear about let me know.

I guess I am running out of ideas because I just live with SB and don’t think about it much. One issue that I do struggle with is weight. I might look online and see what I can find to help us deal with that issue. I don’t want your kids to have to deal with it like I have in my adult life.

thanks again for reading my blog.

Feeling much better

February 22, 2010

Wanted to just post a quick note to let all my readers know that I am feeling much better from the UTI. I finally feel pretty much back to normal..whatever that is.  I never felt so bad and now I am feeling great.

I wanted to ask you all a question. As you know my boyfriend is into Internet Marketing and he builds websites.  He is tossing some ideas around and one that he is tossing around right now is Easter Candy. He is concerned that people would not buy easter candy online. I told him that there are people out there that find it just easier to purchase online. What do you all think?

He and I thank you for input. you will find a couple of his website on my blog here on the right hand side. if you all are into planting he has a great tomato website, if you are into webhosting he has one there too, also Easter costumes, some very cute ones if I do say so myself, but I am a bit bias.

Just check them out ..he works really hard on this and we both want them to succeed.

New Resource

February 20, 2010

Wanted to make you all away of the new resource that I put on my blog.

You will find a link to SpinaBifida Connection on the right handside of my blog.
This is a great resource for people to meet new parents and older adults with Spina Bifida. just wanted  to make you aware of this resource.
I am feeling better for those of you that knew/read about my UTI. I think the meds are finally kicking in. I am just feeling abit drained today. Trying to get my energy back.

Hope you all have a great weekend. Its finally sunny here in NC and not cold or snowing..wahoooo!!

Glad its Friday

February 19, 2010

I know my post lately have not been along the topic of living with SB. The last few days I have been dealing with a UTI. Something that I never had when I was smaller. But as an adult I have had several over the last several years. This one I have to say has been the worse one yet. I am coming to you Mom’s for some advice how can I avoid getting these ? Its been a tough two days. I missed two days of work because of this. I am now on an antibotic that we had around here and I am drinking lots and lots of liquid.

Hope none of you have to experience yourself or through your children. They are no fun. I normally have full bladder and bowel control but with this its been accident after accident. Meaning I gotta stay very close to the bathroom.

I am starting to feel some what better, I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Sad thing that has come out of this is that I am not able to travel and see my best friend and her little girls this weekend.,…sigh

Have a great weekend everyone

What a week….

February 17, 2010

And its only Thursday tomorrow..this has been a rough week for me emotionally. My boyfriend has been so supportive. With this person on the other blog being “mean” to me. Then this new job that I got a few weeks ago, I am now having more responsibilties piled on me. I love the people I work with. The one boss is very demanding and just not a people person.  There is part of this job that apparently no one know how to do, there has been so many people in this job that things just never were passed along correctly. I hope what I am saying is making sense. Or I may just be writing for my self tonight, as my boyfriend says its therapy to write and honestly it is makes me feel better.
I am not sure if any of my followers are Christians who pray. But I would ask that you pray for me during this time of transistion of learning the new job. I am not a quitter but right now I feel like it. Things are just so tough.

People

February 16, 2010

I just need to get something off my chest tonight this has nothing to do with living with spina bifida or how I deal with it. I have had someone from a different SB website come over to my site and just say some rather nasty things to me. This person was so upset that I had no mentioned their website. They said that most of the Mommy’s on the websites want you to feel sorry for them cause they have a baby with SB. I honestly have not run into any of those types of  Mommies on my website. I believe that most of you all are very encouraging to your  child who has SB. I was feeling a bit discouraged tonight when I got his post. He was very demeaning to me. Said that I was not correct in the term of how I classify my SB. I said mine was on the higher end. Guess what I meant by that is that I am a high functioning L-4-5.

I am sorry for this rant email. I just don’t want people like that on my blog and people like that need to know that no all new parents are going to be doom and gloom about their child’s disability. The purpose of my blog here is to encourage others. Is there going to be hard times? Oh yes but we can’t dwell on them.
Thanks for listening.

Interview

February 9, 2010

Good Morning!

Hope all my readers/friends are doing well this morning. Some of you may be bracing for another snow storm. I know where my boyfriend lives he had over 2 feet snow and they are expecting more in the next 24-48 hours.

Ok on to the reason for this post…Awhile back I had recieved an email from the SBAA stating that they were looking for people who have/had done some volunteering. So I wrote the person back and said that I would very much like to be part of this story. I recieved an email response and then set up a time to talk to a gal from SBAA. She then set up an interview with the gal who was doing the story for an interview. I had that last night. The story from what I understand will be in the Insight Magazine that is put out by SBAA, sometime in March/April. Again this is a great way for those of us adults with Spina Bifida to get the word out there and be able to encourage our teens and other adults that yes we can volunteer also does not matter if we have a disablity or not. I wanted to just quickly share that news with you all. I will if I can post the article online once I see it. I was told that once she writes it up and sends it in that I will be given a copy before it goes to print. This magazine is just another resource that I hope you all are able to take advantage of.

Boyfriends Websites..

February 6, 2010

Like I promised I was going to post his websites that he is working on. Wanting to get him more traffic…

He is a Internet Marketer..I think that is the right term he uses. He has four websites, one for

  • Cystic Acne
  • Web Hosting
  • Tomato Seeds
  • Acai Berry

So with out futher ado

Here are the links so you can check it out..if you do visit please comment on what he has and feel free to tell him that Christine sent you.

I have put them on my website could not figure out how to get them here. they are linked on to the side of my website. I will get the other two done later today..hope everyone is having a good day and those of you that are in the north please stay safe.

Do you allow your kids that are older to go out and play in the snow? I used to..just put a snowsuit on the kids and allow them to crawl around in the snow for awhile. this will give the kids a sense of “normalcy” being out there with friends and family.
